3 Day Workshop & Training Program on PLC & SCADA Duration: 15 th Nov.- 17 th Nov., 2017
Organized by: Department of Electrical Engineering in collaboration with IET
Kolkata Network & supported by PROLIFIC
Department of Electrical engineering, B.P.P.I.M.T. and IET Students’ Chapter, B.P.P.I.M.T. has
jointly organized a 3 day Workshop and Training Program on PLC & SCADA from 15 th -17 th
November, 2017. Technical support was provided by Prolific India (Govt. of India approved
organization). The idea behind organizing the workshop was to inculcate the basic fundamentals
of automation in the students and provide them with a platform to work on.
"Programmable Logic Controller" is an essential component of Automated Industries, generally
known as PLC. PLCs along with certain other necessary ingredients like Sensors, Motors,
Actuators, Valves, Conveyors, Boilers, SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition)
Systems, Computers & many more, make a real Automated Manufacturing Plant.
The main objective of PLC & SCADA Workshop was to give an exposure to the aspiring
engineers in the world of industrial automation.
The program was successfully conducted with 54 participants including 10 faculty members.
Technical deliberation by Mr. Dilip Banerjee was very informative with lucid presentation.
At the end of the program, a Technical quiz ‘Tech Enquesta’ was the conducted by the student
members of by IET students’ Chapter BPPIMT. Students from both Electrical Engineering and
Electronics Communication Engineering took part in the quiz.

Carrier Based PWM Inverters: General Concepts |
Speaker : |
Dr. Suvarun Dalapati, Assistant Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering, Indian
Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur, Howrah, India. |
Date & Time : |
1st April, 2017 (Saturday), 3:30 PM - 4:30 PM |
Abstract of the talk:
Pulse width modulation (PWM) inverter is the industrial workhorse for a variety of applications around the
world. After being reported for the first time almost fifty years ago, PWM inverters have been a subject of
research interest by numerous academic and industrial researchers around the world for the past five decades.
At present a variety of PWM strategies exist, which can be popularly classified into two categories – (a)
carrier-based PWM techniques and (b) carrier-free PWM techniques. This presentation will focus on the most
popular version of carrier-based PWM technique – namely the Sine-PWM technique. Starting from the elementary
idea of DC-AC conversion by the six-switch (two-level) inverter by using the square wave (180° mode) operation,
the talk will explain the basic essence of the Sine-PWM technique and discuss its advantages over the square wave
mode of operation. Two principle drawbacks of the Sine-PWM technique – (a) the synchronization problem and (b)
the DC bus utilization problem will also be discussed.

Membership Drive of IET Student Chapter Kolkata Network Date: 25 th August, 2017
Speaker: Prof. Dr. Jayanta Kumar Roy, Chairman, IET (UK) Kolkata Network
B.P. Poddar Institute of Management & Technology organised an “On Campus Membership
Drive Program” on 25 th August 2018. 56 students from 1 st , 2 nd and 3 rd year registered them as a
member of IET(UK). Former Chairman (IET Kolkata Network) Prof. Jayanta Kumar Roy
delivered small briefings on the activity of IET Kolkata Network and the advantage of being a
student member of IET. Also he delivered small lectures on IOT.
