Invited talk(gap-address sesion) on 5G Communication and Network Security

The department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) of B. P. Poddar Institute of Management and Technology (BPPIMT), Kolkata organized an one-day invited talk(gap-address sesion) on "5G Communication and Network Security” on December 20, 2021 through Zoom virtual platform.

In this event eminent speaker Dr Hemant Rath Senior Scientist TCS Research & Innovation, shared his knowledge and expertise on the recent advancement in the area of 5G communication , block-chain as well as network security issues to address the gap with present subject curriculum . There were about 110 registered student participants from the department and were able to grasp important knowledge on aforementioned topics to meet industry requirements from this event.

Dr. Somali Sikder, Coordinator of the event welcomed all the participants at the beginning of the session. The event was inaugurated by respected Dr. Ivy Majumdar, Head of the Department, ECE. She also encouraged the students by highlighting the importance and relevance of the talk to boost up their knowledge in the recent advanced communication field. Dr. Jayeeta Chanda, coordinator IIPC cell, BPPIMT addressed the audience.

Senior faculty members of the department Dr. Arijit Saha, Dr. Surajit Mandal and Ms. Rashmita Mishra provided their valuable ideas and shared support to make the event more perfect.

Workshop on web development “ScriptEd”

The Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering organized a 4-day workshop on web development “ScriptEd” in association with SPIE Student Chapter, BPPIMT during 9th-12th December, 2021. The workshop was inaugurated by the welcome speech from Prof. B. N. Chatterji, Emeritus Professor, Former Dean (academic affairs of BPPIMT). Prof. Dr. Ivy Majumder, HOD, ECE, Dr. Vedatrayee Chakraborty, Convener of ScriptEd, Assistant Professor, ECE and Dr. Ranjana Goswami, HOD , Applied Sciences and Humanities said a few words regarding the main topic of the workshop and congratulated the whole team of SPIE student chapter for their efforts to organize this event workshop. A brief overview of SPIE student chapter, BPPIMT was given by Ms. Debasmita Bag, President of SPIE Student Chapter, BPPIMT.

In the workshop, four student speakers were from 3rd year ECE. In the first day, Mr. Parichay Dey, Convenor of SPIE Student Chapter, gave an excellent explanation on the topic “Basics of HTML and CSS”.

On second day, Mr. Arko Sen, Student Coordinator of the SPIE Student Chapter, BPPIMT delivered a valuable lecture on "Scripting in JavaScript". Mr. Bhaskar Sengupta, 3rd Year, ECE delivered an extremely beneficial lecture on "Diving Deep into JS Library" on third day of the workshop and on the final dayday Mr. Rajat Mondal, Web Master of the SPIE Student Chapter, delivered an efficacious lecture entitled as "Develop Your Own Netflix with React."

On each day of the event, after the main lecture session a quiz was shared with the participants. In this event over 200 students participated from different departments like ECE, CSE, EE, IT, BCA, MCA. All the sessions were vey interactive and the participants also provided very positive feedback on the workshop. In the last day the event was concluded by a valedictory session. The session was graced by Prof. Dr. Sutapa Mukherjee, Principal, BPPIMT and Dr. Ivy Majumder, HOD, ECE who praised the speakers of the workshop for teaching the participants efficiently and commended the whole team for their hard work. At the end Mr Ramesh Kumar, Convenor of ScriptEd, Assistant Professor, ECE gave a Vote of Thanks.

Workshop on Decoding Python

The Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering organized a 4-day workshop “Decoding Python” in association with the International Society of Optics and Photonics (SPIE) Student Chapter, BPPIMT. The main goal of the workshop was to introduce students to Python - a popular High-level, Object-Oriented, Interpreter based programming language, and get them comfortable with the syntax and semantics. The principal objective was to foster an interest in Coding and develop appropriate logic-based critical thinking that would enhance their future job prospects. The areas are to be covered throughout this 4-day workshop included the installation of Python, knowing the basics of Python, playing with loops in Python, delving in searching and sorting techniques, and problem solving attitude. Certificates would be awarded to participants completing the workshop. Assignments would be given to the participants to learn how to think and apply their knowledge.

The workshop was started on 26th June, 2021 and continued till 29th June, 2021. In the first day of the workshop the host Mr. Raunak Banerjee gave the welcome address welcoming respected Emeritus professor, former Dean Prof. Dr. B.N Chatterji of BPPIMT, respected Prof. (Dr.) Sutapa Mukherjee, Principal, BPPIMT and respected Head of Department (HOD) of Electronics and Communication Engineering Dr. Ivy Majumdar, all the respected teachers and the participants.

Respected Prof. Dr. B.N Chatterji inaugurated the workshop by sharing words of wisdom. Prof. (Dr.) Sutapa Mukherjee, Principal, BPPIMT shared some valuable and inspiring words. Then respected HOD of ECE Department Dr. Ivy Majumdar gave a wonderful speech giving short overview of the workshop and a short outline detailing the ins and outs of the ethos of SPIE Student Chapter.

The main event started with the explanation of installation process of VS Code and Python (3.9.5) by Mr. Rajat Mondal, 2nd year, ECE. After his session, speaker Mr. Arko Sen from 2nd year, ECE, delivered an exemplary session explaining the “Basics of Python” - input output statements, data types, libraries and python functions. The participants were interactive and actively asked queries about their doubts. Finally, the President of SPIE Student Chapter, Mr. Soumya Koley, 3rd year ECE, described the detailed benefits of joining SPIE - industrial visits, seminars by eminent, personalities and leadership growth opportunities. The session ended with feedback session.

Day 3 of Decoding Python was hosted by Mr. Parichay Dey. The session was covered by Mr. Raunak Banerjee, 2nd year ECE, who gave a marvelous and animated explanation on the topic “Delving into Searching and Sorting”- various sorting and searching techniques.

During the break session, Dr. Arijit Saha, Associate Professor, ECE sir gave a wonderful speech encouraging the participants and thanking the organizing team for their efforts to organize such a successful workshop. The participants also gave their inputs about the workshop. The session was interactive and was concluded with a feedback session. Our respected teachers Mr. Ramesh Kumar and Mr. Abhijit Mukherjee also gave their valuable inputs.

The last day of the workshop was co-anchored by Mr. Rajat Mondal and Mr. Raunak Banerjee. In the last day, an alumnus of the Dept. of ECE, Mr. Tanumoy Nandi – currently working as a Specialist Programmer at Infosys was invited as a Guest Speaker. Mr. Tanumoy Nandi spoke on the topic “Technologies using Python” which included all the latest technologies used in the current industry. After the session by Guest speaker, Mr. Soumya Koley, President, SPIE felicitated the Guest Speaker with the certificate of appreciation. Mr. Arko Sen explained mapping in Python followed by Mr. Rajat Mondal explaining a simple auto-corrector code.

In the valedictory session Dr. Ivy Majumdar, HOD, ECE congratulated the organizer team and the participants on successful completion of the event. The session ended with a vote of thanks by Dr. Vedatrayee Chakraborty, Assistant Professor, ECE followed by the feedback session.

EPILOGUE 2020--Stepping into new horizons……

Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, B.P.Poddar Institute of management and technology has successfully organized the “EPILOGUE 2020--Stepping into new horizons……))”; an interactive session with our pass out students (2016-2020 batch).The day 8 th August, 2020 will be remembered by all the members of department of ECE and our beloved students of pass out batch.

The program was graced by our honorable Principal Madam, Dr. Sutapa Mukherjee; Head of the Department, Dr. Ivy Majumdar; Dy. Registrar sir Dr. K. Prabhakaran, Training and Placement Head, Mr. Debasish Bakshi and Alumni Association representative, Mr. R. Chakraborty.
Students, Faculty and Technical staff members were emotionally connected making the program a grand success. We are pleased that more than 130 participants were present on that day in Google meet and YouTube live.

One Week Faculty Development Program on Recent Trends in Communication Systems & Devices

Department of Electronics and Communication of B.P. Poddar Institute of Management & Technology had successfully organized a One Week Faculty Development Program on “Recent Trends in Communication Systems & Devices” from 21st to 25th July 2020 through Google Meet & You Tube Live Streaming to accommodate more than 100 participants attending the event. Webinar on Post Covid 19: Future Scope and Challenges for Engineering Professionals in Industry and Higher Studies

A three day webinar series was organized by Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering of B.P. Poddar Institute of Management & Technology on the topic -“Post COVID 19: Future Scope & Challenges for Engineering Professionals in Industry & Higher Studies”. This webinar series was held from 10th to 12th July, 2020 via Google Meet and due to registration of large number of participants from our Institute and from other Institutes as well, YouTube Live Streaming of the webinar was arranged so that we could accommodate all the registered participants. Nearly 160 participants joined the session, which were taken by the alumni of this Institute.

The Day 1 of the webinar was inaugurated by Principal Madam of the Institute Prof. (Dr.) Sutapa Mukherjee. The gracious presence of Former Dean of Academics, Prof . (Dr.) B.N. Chatterji Sir also motivated the speakers and the participants. This session was conducted by Dr. Shaumik Bhattacharya who is presently working as an Assistant Professor in Department of Electronics & Electrical, IIT Kharagpur. He provided brilliant insights on higher studies opportunities and also on Machine Learning. On Day 2 of the session, Mr. Samaresh Halder, presently working as a Senior Service Engineer at Ericsson India Pvt. Ltd. shared his knowledge on Telecom Radio Access Network Overview including GSM (2G), WCDMA(3G) & LTE (4G). Two eminent speakers Mr. Debasish Das and Mr. Siddharta Chakraborty separately took an hour session on last day of the webinar. Mr. Das who is founder of D.D. Electro Tech inspired the participants by sharing his ideas on how to make business successful using Social Media whereas Mr. Chakraborty enlightened the participants on Preparation of Job, prospect of Automation testing in IT industry. The webinar was mainly directed to the students so that they can gain some idea on various prospects that awaits them in Post- Pandemic period. But it was wonderful to see that many faculty & staff members also joined the session and helped in successful completion of the webinar.

Two days’ webinar on Data Science with Python

It is our immense pleasure to share that the department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, BPPIMT has organized a two days webinar “Data Science with Python” on 7/05/20 and 08/05/20. The event is a joint venture of SPIE, student chapter of the college & Webel Fujisoft Vara Centre of Excellence in Industry 4.0. Almost eighty numbers of students have been participated in this online program. It is a wonderful opportunity for our participants to enrich their knowledge on artificial intelligence and data science. Some hands-on online demonstration also delivered by the presenter Mr. Krishna Mouli on the second day of this event.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Mr. Anirban Choudhuri , centre manager who has put tremendous effort to make this event on this crisis period of lockdown. I would also like to thank our student coordinator Mr. Niprojit Ghosh & Subhjit Laha for arranging the occasion so smoothly from our college end.

Industry visit to Westin Hotel, Bhaskar solar

A one day industry tour was organised by the Department of Electronics and communication Engineering, B. P.Poddar Institute of Management and Technology, to the Westin Hotel, Rajarhat where a unique installation of Solar Plant of Capacity 103 KWp was set up by Bhaskar Solar. The solar grids are located in two separate building Rooftops and on the Parking Ramp. Among two buildings; one of the buildings is having installation at a height of 35th Floor i.e at helipad. This is mainly a captive plant where by the installed set up it generates Green Energy in the form of solar power and offsets their internal power consumption from the GRID/DISCOM. The Installation consists of Solar panels from Renesola & ABB inverters.

Thirty students of the 2nd and 3rd year participated in this tour and they were very excited to see the practical set of solar grid and solar panel on the field area.

workshop on Embedded System Design & IoT (Phase-I)

Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering, BPPIMT has successfully organized a 2-days hands-on workshop on "Embedded System Design & IoT (Phase-I)" on Feb 14-15, 2020 at B. P. Poddar Institute of Management & Technology, Kolkata. Students from ECE 2nd year and 3rd year have participated in this workshop. Faculties from ECE department, Mr. Ramesh Kumar & Mr. Prasenjit Kr. Mudi provided intensive hands-on training on industry standard TI (Texas Instruments) micro-controllers such as TI MSP430, TIVA C Series Launch Pad, TI CC3100 WiFi Module using Code Composer Studio v6 and Energia v1.8 software environments. In this workshop, the full capacity of 24 students were trained about basic architecture of TI MSP430 & TIVA C Series Launch Pad, on-board GPIO control, interfacing sensors using GROVE Sensor Kit, UART serial communication protocol, HTTP server and client setup using CC3100 WiFi module and monitoring physical environment activity on cloud. Though all the participants passed workshop assessment test, Bishal Das, ECE-A 3rd year, Soubhik Maji, ECE-B 2nd year and Satyajit Sarkar, ECE-B 2nd year became the top performers. This workshop has thus become a successful initiative to train participants to participate in technical challenges, project & research activity in future.

National Conference on Information, Photonics and Communication (IPC) 2019

From the 1st-3rdFebruary 2019 the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering of B.P. Poddar Institute of Management and Technology in association with the SPIE Student Chapter organized its 2ndNational Conference on Information, Photonics and Communication (IPC) 2019 sponsored by IEEE and published by Springer.

The conference aimed to introduce the concepts of photonic information, signal processing & intelligent system, device & VLSI, communication system & networks to students, researchers, engineers and scientists. Many eminent speakers both from academia and industry enlightened the audience from various perspectives and thereby provided an overview of the state of the art in the field. Theproceedings of the conference consisted of invited talks by eminent speakers from industry an academia, paper presentation sessions and tutorials

Day 1 of the conference started with a workshop on “Embedded System and IOT” which enlightened the participants with hands-on training with state of the art technology in the field of Embedded Systems and IOT. Following this workshop was the first invited talk of IPC 2019 which was delivered by Prof. Jyotsna Kumar Mandal from the University of Kalyani. Prof. J.K. Mandal delivered his talk on “Similarities in Technical Writings and its Management”, where he imparted his wisdom to several paper presenters about plagiarism and how technical papers should be presented and written without plagiarizing any detail.Theday was concluded with the inauguration ceremony of IPC 2019-declaring the three-day National conference open by our chief guest and general chairperson of IPC 2019-Prof. Dr. D. Chattopadhyayand the vote of thanks by the Convener of IPC 2019-Dr. Ivy Majumdar.

Day 2 of the conference began with the Keynote Address by Prof. B.M. Arora from IIT Bombay. Prof. B.M. Arora addressed the “Advances in Silicon Photovoltaics” and imparted wisdom to the audience in the field of solar cells and photovoltaic cells. This keynote address was followed by an invited talk from industry expert-Ms. Mitali Biswas, Associate Director of IBM. Ms. Mitali Biswas spoke on “IoT-creating a smarter tomorrow”. She familiarized the audience with the present-dayadvances of IoT and what could be the future of the world with IoT as a medium to make a smarter world. After this the first session of paper presentation was in action. The track of the session was Microelectronics and VLSI. The track chairs were Prof B.M. Arora, IIT Bombay, and Ms. Sujata Pal, BPPIMT. After the end of the first session of paper presentation the conference received two more invited talks-one by our alumni who is now a professor at IIT Dhanbad-Prof. Ansuman Bhattacharya and the other talk was delivered by Prof. Kallol Bhattacharya from the University of Calcutta.Then there was parallel session of paper presentation(session 2 and session 3). Session 2 of paper presentation was on the track of Communication System and Networks. The track chairs of this session were Prof. Kallol Bhattacharya, University of Calcutta and Dr. Surajit Mandal, BPPIMT. Session 3 of paper presentation was on the track of Signal Processing & Computational Intelligence. The track chairs of this session were Prof. T.K. Basu, IIT Kharagpur and Dr. Arijit Saha, BPPIMT. Day 2 of IPC was concluded by a cultural performance by the students of BPPIMT.

Day 3 of the conference began with two invited talks. The first invited talk was delivered by Prof. Sumana Gupta from IIT Kanpur. Prof. Sumana Gupta delivered her talk on “Selective Motion Segmentation using Spatiotemporal Regularity Flow Model”. The second invited talk was delivered by Prof. Abhirup Das Barman from the University of Calcutta. Prof. Abhirup Das Barman delivered his talk on “Network densification and interference management in femto-cells”. After this we moved onto a parallel paper presentation session(session 4 and session 5). Session 4 of paper presentation was on the track of Communication System & Network. The track chairs of this session were Prof. Abhirup Das Barman, University of Calcutta and Ms. Somali Sikder, BPPIMT. Session 5 of paper presentation was on the track ofSignal Processing & Computational Intelligence. The track chairs were Prof. Sumana Gupta, IIT Kanpur and Dr. Ivy Majumdar, BPPIMT. These were the last two sessions of paper presentation. This was followed by a session of Poster Paper Presentation. Day 3 of IPC was concluded by a valedictory session in which all the paper presenters received certificates of paper presentation. IEEE (WIE) awarded the top two papers presented at IPC 2019 with the IEEE-WIE Best and IEEE-WIE Award and a small cash prize along with it. The conference was ended by the vote of thanks delivered by the organizing committee chairperson of IPC 2019-Dr. Ranjana Goswami.

workshop on "Advanced Embedded Systems, Robotics & DSP"

Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering, BPPIMT has organized a workshop on "Advanced Embedded Systems, Robotics & DSP" in collaboration with Digital Shark Technology, Texas Instruments University Program Partner on 22nd August 2019 at B. P. Poddar Institute of Management & Technology, Kolkata. Faculty & Technical staff members from ECE, EE, IT & CSE departments have participated in this workshop. Experienced experts from Digital Shark Technology Bangalore have provided hands on training to the participants on TI MSP430, CC3100 boards and RSLK kits with the help of Energia tool.

Advanced Embedded Systems, Robotics & DSP

Workshop on “Advanced Optical Communication”

Aiming to provide an open forum for faculty members and undergraduate students with an emphasis on Design and Testing of Optical Systems, a one-day Workshop on “Advanced Optical Communication” was organized by the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering in association with SPIE Student Chapter, BPPIMT, on September 6, 2019. 102 students and 23 faculty & staff members actively participated in the workshop.

On the first half of the day, a lecture was delivered by Dr. Ivy Majumder, HOD, ECE Dept. on “Optical Communication, An Overview” followed by a Hands-on training Session on“Advanced Optical Communication” conducted by Dr. Surajit Mondal, Ms. Somali Sikder and Mr. Debashish Sharma from the Department of ECE.

On the second half, two invited lecture sessions were held. Dr. Anirban Dhar, Senior Scientist, CSIR-CGCRI, delivered a lecture on “Specialty Optical Fiber: Materials, fabrication & Opportunities”. Dr. Mrinmay Pal, Principal Scientist, CSIR-CGCRI, delivered a lecture on “Basics on Fiber Laser and Fiber Amplifiers”. The program was concluded with a feedback session both from the students and the invited speakers. This event was a grand success.

Workshop on “IOT and Embedded System Design”

Two days workshop on “IOT and Embedded System Design” Under TI University Program was held from 20th-21st December 2018 at ECE Department B. P. Poddar Institute of Management & Technology, Kolkata. Faculty & Technical Staff members from ECE, EE, IT,CA & CSE department have attended in this workshop. Experienced experts from Digital Shark Technology Bangalore (Texas Instruments University program) have provided hands on training to the participants on TI MSP430, TIVA C, CC3100 boards MSP430 & Tiva C series kits with the help of Energia & Code Composer IDE & tools.
